Recommended Saltwater Aquarium Equipments and Fishes

It is absolutely an exciting event when setting up your first saltwater tank. Since the varieties of saltwater fishes are more, they provide a soothing and pleasant atmosphere. Since saltwater aquariums require more maintenance, they may be frustrating sometimes. It is very important to analyze certain facts about saltwater fish tank before you purchase one.

The first decision is about the actual tank. There are two types of aquarium tanks – glass and acrylic. Acrylic is expensive than glass tanks. However acrylic tanks are beneficial in several ways. Acrylic tanks insulate better than glass tank and the temperature remains more stable than the glass tank.

Acrylic tanks are stronger and flexible thereby less prone to leakage or breakage. Acrylic is lighter and also easier to drill for installing filters. However if you have trouble buying an acrylic tank you can start off with a glass tank since you would initially buy hardy fishes and they are easy to be taken care of.

You may want to consider buying an aquarium kit since they come with all the required equipment for maintaining your tank. The most common items that are included in an aquarium kit are manuals, heaters, filters and test kits which are required for setting up the first saltwater tank.

Some aquarium kits are so elaborate that they contain everything excepting water and fishes. They include lot of decorative items and plants, fish food, water conditioner, power filters, fluorescent fixtures and so on that are available for fish tank size varying from 30 gallons to 50 gallons.

If you are planning to go for a low maintenance tank, then you may want to decide on a kid that doesn’t require additional plumbing done externally for filtration. Such kits have provisions where the filters can be attached to the back of the aquarium and the maintenance will be easier is such tanks.

When you go for a fish purchase for your first saltwater tank you are more likely to be tempted to buy bigger and colorful fishes. It is however not suggested to go for such expensive fishes after you are well experienced in maintaining some hardy fishes that are less expensive.

The common clownfish is quite easy to maintain and feed however they may turn aggressive at times. So it is not wise to have more than a few of them in your saltwater aquarium. Finding a few of their favorite anemones around would keep your hardy happy.

Damselfish is another choice for your new saltwater aquarium however since they are highly aggressive to other fishes of their breed, it is better to keep not more than one of these colorful fishes.

Tangs are another good choice for your new tank. However, since they feed on algae, you may have to ensure there is sufficient of algae present in the tank, or you may have to provide them with additional food supplement. Of all the tang varieties the hardiest is powder blue tang. If you can keep only one of them in your tank, that would sustain harmony amongst the fishes.

In addition to the hardy fishes you may also add some cleaner shrimp, hermit crabs and anemone crab to the tank which would entertain as well as easy to keep.
