Recommended Freshwater Fish Type for Inexperience Owners
Though setting up a freshwater fish tank for the first time is full of fun and excitement, it has to be done carefully. It is quite important to understand the maintenance required for each fish types before choosing them for your aquarium. It is better to find a good starter fish for you’re your new aquarium. It is not quite difficult to get a hardy, the starter fish since they are available anywhere and inexpensive too.
If this is the first time you are setting up a fish tank, guppies may be ideal to start with. They are often used as juveniles in feeder fish tanks, and they cost very cheap, that you may but up to 10 fishes for a dollar. Though they are not quire attractive and colorful to be watched till they mature, they provide the experience you may require to raise up fishes.
If you do not want to wait till the baby guppies grow to mature adults, you may even buy adult guppies straight away. Guppies are community fishes hence they get along with other fishes easily. They require minimum care and it is quite easy to feed them as well. Guppies being hardy and laid back they surprise you with producing several dozen offspring in a short span.
If guppies do not fascinate you much, you may go for tetras. Tetras are rarely aggressive and highly social ones. They are often found in groups of six or more. They are actually smaller in size and aren’t quite colorful and attractive but their nature of darting about together fascinates the new owner.
If you feel guppies and tetras are too small then gourami can be considered to be used as starter fishes. Gouramis are rarely aggressive towards other fish species and they are easy to be cared for. Gouramis are commonly found in pairs and sometimes the males are aggressive towards other males of the same species.
Loaches are another variety of fish that requires little maintenance and can get along with other fishes very well. You may have to provide a pipe or a rock for the loaches to hide themselves since they prefer a secluded space most of the time. Loaches enjoy being accompanied with each other however, yoyo loach prefer to be alone all the time.
Another good choice for starter fishes is Barbs. Barbs prefer to be with a group of about 4 or more fishes in the aquarium. They are quite easy to maintain and feed. However, they tend to shred fins hence they are not suitable to be with fishes with long fins such as guppies or angelfish.
One of the most preferred fishes is angelfish. You can find a few in every aquarium but they are major bullies in a group of different species of fishes. They chase and eat smaller fishes such as tetras however, if the fishes that the angelfish attack are larger, then they tend to shred their fins. It is a good idea to keep only angelfishes in a tank and avoid other varieties of fishes. Angelfishes are mostly seen in pairs and groups.
