Bird Profile: The Parrotlet
Many people find the parrotlet to be among the most delightful of all pet birds. Though he is tiny, he more than makes up for his miniature size with his great spirit. Easy going and very friendly, the small parrotlet makes a very welcome pet in many bird-friendly homes.
The parrotlet is only five inches in length. Though he is the smallest of all parrots, he might also be the most social in the parrot family. The parrotlet loves to interact with people, and even other animals. He is mischievous and curious, requiring a great deal of supervision whenever he is out of his cage. Because of his small size, he is quite capable of squeezing into tiny places that humans cannot fit into. If you let your parrotlet have free reign over your home, you may end up losing him in a piece of furniture, a wall, or even worse.
Though the parrotlet is friendly and loves to socialize, it is important to be careful when letting him interact with other animals. The parrotlet typically enjoys chasing other birds and pets. However, some pets may not take kindly to this little parrot’s attention. Though he seemingly wants to play, he can border on the side of irritating to a less than sociable dog or cat. Likewise, even a friendly pet may get a little too rough with the games, ultimately hurting the tiny parrotlet.
However, the parrotlet is intelligent and adaptable, making him a relatively easy going pet. Ensure that you have the time to get to know and bond with the friendly parrotlet before getting one as your pet.
The parrotlet is most closely related to the Amazon parrot. Their are a number of different parrotlet varieties including the green rumped, the Mexican, the Pacific, and the dusky billed. He has a lifespan of over twenty years, so it is important to prepare for such a large commitment before investing in a parrotlet.

I spent 2 years in Brazil, half of it in the Amazon Jungle, where I saw millions of parrots like the Amazon Yellow Nape and the Double Yellow Head, along with many kinds of Macaws. I don’t recall seeing any of these friendly parrotlets there, but a friend of mine in Peru says they have a variety down there. Sounds like a fun pet! Thanks for sharing a great article.
