Pionus Parrots Facts, Behavior and Health Care Info
If you’re in the market for a parrot, but for whatever reason, you need one that’s a bit laid back and relatively quiet, you may want to take a look at the Pionus. Generally, Pionus parrots are very mild mannered. They are also fairly quiet. Even the loud ones aren’t as noisy as most other species. This being the case, you should probably look elsewhere if you’re looking for a good talker. Of the various types of Pionus, the Maximilian and blue headed are usually the best talkers.
Behavior and Characteristics
Pionus parrots are different from most others in many ways. While most parrots seem to
enjoy keeping themselves looking neat and attractive, the Pionus is a bit more careless about
his appearance. It’s not uncommon for a Pionus to let his down feathers poke through when he
is relaxing. The Pionus parrot also smells quite different than most others. It’s not an offensive
odor, but it is definitely unique to this species.
These birds will also make a strange, wheezing sound when they are nervous or afraid.
Many people mistake this sound for respiratory distress, but it usually just means that he is
frightened and needs to calm down.
Breed Appearance and Care Info
The most commonly kept Pionus is the white capped. They stand around nine and one half
inches (24cm) tall. The color of this bird is muted green, blue, red and bronze along with the
white cap. Although they are generally on the shy side, they can be quite stubborn when they
want to be.
At eleven and three quarter inches (30cm) long, the Maximilian Pionus is somewhat bigger
than the white cap. The coloring of these birds is mostly dull green with bluish green on their
throats. While the appearance of these birds isn’t quite as eye catching as some, they still
make very good pets. These birds love attention and want nothing more than to play and
cuddle with their owners. Your bird may, however, be a bit withdrawn when you first bring him
home until he is comfortable in his new surroundings.
If the look of the Maxi isn’t quite flashy enough for you, the blue headed Pionus may be
more of what you’re looking for. The green body and bright blue head make this bird quite
attractive. The blue head measures eleven inches (28cm) in length. These birds are usually
quite costly due to their beautiful appearance, sometimes as much as a thousand dollars or
more. Be careful not to spoil your blue head when he is young. They tend to develop quite an
attitude if you do. Otherwise, they are good natured, affectionate companion for you and your
family.
Also available, are the dusky and bronze wing Pionus. Dusky Pionus will have bluish gray
coloring with a pink chest. These birds are considered to be quite curious and intelligent, and
they measure approximately nine and three quarter inches (24cm) in length.
Bronze wing Pionus have a blue colored body and of course, bronze colored wings. If the
lighting is right, the coloring of these birds really comes to life. The bronze colored wings are a
very attractive feature. These birds are eleven inches (28cm) long and are probably the most
laid back of all the Pionus parrots. These birds make great pets, even though they tend to be
on the shy side.
If the personality of your bird is more important to you than having a great talker, then the
Pionus parrot may be just what you’re looking for.
