Senegal Parrot Facts, Behavior and Health Care Info
The Senegal parrot is very colorful and is known for being cuddly and playful. These birds
are not the most vocal or the best talkers in the parrot family, but they are capable of learning
twenty or thirty phrases. Senegals will make an affectionate and fun addition to your family.
Behavior and Characteristics
Senegal parrots are great pets if you want a bird that is loveable and cuddly, especially
the ones that have been handfed. These birds really love people and have been known to
snuggle in the crook of their owner’s arms so they can play with their fingers. Senegals love to
be with their family so much that sometimes they will follow them around the house like a dog.
Don’t turn your head if you have snacks on the table, because when you turn back around,
they might be gone.
Along with being a loyal and affectionate companion, these birds also tend to be a bit
accident prone. Make sure you always keep an eye on him or you might end up stepping on
him. Keep him in his cage if you are cooking or if you have uncovered standing water. These
birds could easily fly into a pot of boiling water or an open toilet by accident.
Senegal parrots can be a bit vocal, but not as noisy as some of the larger species. Many
people successfully keep these birds in apartments without any trouble. They do have their
moments, however, so you may get the occasional complaint from your close neighbors.
Most Senegals will welcome attention from several different people, making them well suited
for families. Occasionally, females may bond with just one person and become nippy and
standoffish toward others. If this happens, it can be corrected. Let the other members of the
family tend to the bird and interact with her for a while. The person that she bonded with
originally should stay away during this time, allowing the bird to become comfortable with
everyone else. This should take care of the problem.
Senegals Care Info
As with most species, Senegals will do better with a varied diet consisting of some fruits
and veggies as well as bean mixes. Be careful, when using fresh foods, that it does not spoil.
This will keep your bird from getting sick unnecessarily. If your bird is healthy and happy, he
may live well over 30 years.
A larger, roomy cage is recommended for Senegal parrots. They need room to be able to
climb around and flap their wings. This way, they will be able to stay active, even when they
are not able to be out. Keep in mind, these birds have powerful beaks and will destroy a cage
made with thin bars.
