The Caique is a type of parrot from the Amazon rain-forest. There are a number of different types of Caiques. Though they are not talkers like many parrots, they are still popular pets with many bird enthusiasts.

There are two main types of Caique. Within each type of Caique there are also a number of more specific variations of the bird. However the two primary types of Caique are the Black Headed Caique and the White Bellied Caique. All of the Caiques are generally on the smaller side, and quite colorful.

With the Caiques, the males and females look exactly the same. It is not possibly to differentiate between the genders by sight. If you are interested in purchasing a Caique, it is best to do a DNA test so that you can see whether you are getting a male Caique or a female Caique.

Unlike many parrots, the Caiques are not known for being talking birds. While some of them will learn to repeat certain sounds and words, they do not do so as articulately as many of the popular pet parrots. Therefore they are not the ideal pet for someone who wants to teach their bird tricks.

Additionally, the Caique can be somewhat aggressive at times. They are known to be biters and chewers, not only making a mess of things within their cages but also biting their owners at times. It is important to keep them stimulated so as to avoid encouraging them to form chewing habits.

Despite their chewing tendencies, they are actually very sweet pets for the right owner. They enjoy playtime with their owner, and also become very loyal. It is best to keep them in a stable environment and to reduce stress whenever possible by always providing playtime, a high quality diet, toys, and plenty of fresh water.
