Cat Eyes

27 January 2009 252 views No Comment

By learning to understand your cat’s gaze, you will be able to understand your cat as well. A great way to bond with your cat is to have a starring contest! This is done by you and your cat staring at each other. Eventually, your cat will blink its eyes slowly. There are a few cat owners who seem to think that this is the equivalent of your cat blowing you a kiss. So be sure to return the favor and blink back at your cat!

Cats do not have a third eye; they have a third eyelid called a nictitating membrane. A cats eyesight is much sharper than a humans eyesight. This inner eyelid protects your cats eyes from harm and dryness. Whenever your cat is sick, this membrane will close a little bit, and you should immediately take your cat to the vet.

Your cat’s pupils should also be observed carefully, as a change in size of one pupil can be an indication of an inflammation or a neurological disorder called Horner’s Syndrome. It could also indicate tumors or injuries in the central nervous system of your cat.

Although cats do have nocturnal vision, they cannot see in complete and total darkness. Cats have muscles on their iris that surround the pupils of their eyes. These are constructed in such a way that it narrows into a vertical split when they are exposed in the bright lights and opens fully when in dim light. This is a great feature of cats’ eyes that actually helps them to hunt for food during the night before they were domesticated. This holds true for feral cats as well.

You should check your cat’s eye on a regular, daily basis. As soon as you notice something that is not quite right or something that wasn’t there the day before, you should immediately call your vet and take your cat in to the vet’s office. If you suspect that your cat has Pink Eye, be sure to quarantine your cat away from other cats that are in the same household as Pink Eye can spread quickly.
