Egyptian Mau Cat Behavior, Facts and Health Care Problem

The Egyptian Mau is a cat breed that is descended from the African Wild Cats ancient Egyptian Pharaohs domesticated and worshipped along with keeping them as loving pets.

Balinese History
In the nineteen fifties, an exiled member of Russian Royalty brought these majestic cats to the United States. For many decades, these two cats were the only ancestors to all Mau’s in North America. This being the case, in order to ensure that the bloodline not become contaminated with any hereditary flaws or diseases due to constant inbreeding, cat breeder’s brought over additional Mau’s to add to the gene pool.

Appearance
The characteristic traits of an Egyptian Mau are unique to say the least. The body is petite in weight, only averaging around five to eleven pounds, but the frame of this breed is one of sturdy, muscular shape. An additional unique quality this breed displays in appearance is its wedge shaped head that almost looks too small for its own body. It also has a mighty tail that is on average two thirds of the length of its body. Its movements are reminiscent of those of a graceful wild jungle cat, even though its paws are quite small and dainty.

The Cat Fancier’s Association standard specific colors for this breed are smoke, silver tabby and bronze tabby. There are, on occasion, a few rare black cats born, however, these cats are not recognized and are unable to compete in the CFA’s Championship Class. No matter the color of choice, all Egyptian Mau’s displays a spotted coat.

Facial expressions bring another endearing quality to the Egyptian Mau as their eyes and the formation of their mouths, give a viewer the impression that they have been startled, and are experiencing anxiety. The good news is that this breed is well known for being one with a light-hearted, care free nature. The most fascinating trait these cats possess is the distinct look of kohl lined eyes, which is exactly the way Egyptians wore their eyes.

Behavior and Characteristics
For those of you who are not partial to the loud talkative cat breeds, the Egyptian Mau is the answer. This quiet breed’s version of vocalization mimics that of a faint chuckle, making it the perfect breed for anyone living in a multi-unit building. The Egyptian Mau is a happy cat and this is always quite evident as it has the ability to wag its tail just as a happy dog would.

An Egyptian Mau is a cat that is affectionate and loyal. These cats love their families and tend to be very protective of them. As they are an active cat as well as a playful one, the Egyptian Mau requires lots of toys to keep him busy and entertained. The family loving and loyal nature of this breed makes it a perfect addition to homes that already contain multiple cats. If your home does not have multiple cats or you are not home on a frequent basis, then the Mau is probably not the best fit. These cats are devoted to their owners and require lots of attention and affection.

Grooming
Grooming for the Egyptian Mau is typical of the regiment for a short hair cat. A good brushing once a week to remove loose hair and dander will keep their coat smooth and healthy. In order to control excess amounts of dander which can often cause allergies, you can bathe your Mau once a month. In addition to the brushing and bathing of his hair, cats are highly susceptible to dental disease, so it is highly recommended that a regular tooth brushing, several times a week be introduced when your Mau is a kitten.

Anyone looking to quench a craving for a wild jungle cat, but want a sweet, loving and devoted pet, should look no further than the Egyptian Mau.
