La Perm Cat Behavior, Facts and Health Care Problem

If you are a fan of the wavy perms that were so popular in the nineteen eighties, you will definitely be thrilled with the look of the La Perm cat breed.

Appearance
It is not surprising that along with sharing the hair trend of this decade, the La Perm actually originated at this time as well. Many have often commented after having viewed a La Perm for the first time that this breed tends to look as if it is having a “Bad Hair Day.”

Since the founding breeder did not realize how unique this breed actually was, they did not breed for specific types or standards. The La Perm is available in every color and pattern your imagination desires. It is interesting to note that the founding kitten was completely bald. While most kittens are born with hair in this breed, it is very common for them to become bald as they loose their kitten fur and are waiting for the adult coat to come in.

The best part about this particular breed is that it comes in either longhair or shorthair. So, anyone who does not have hours upon hours to devote to grooming, may still enjoy this breed with the luxury of the shorthaired La Perm.

In addition to the hair difference, the longhair version hosts an elegantly plumed tail, while the shorthair displays a more average tail. The shorthair version also displays a more Oriental type ear than the longhair version. Both varieties, however, display the same physical characteristics of a wedge shaped head, large eyes, and well toned bodies. Both varieties are also considered to be on the large side, weighing in at an impressive eight to twelve pounds. Each of these cats harbors a distinct undercoat and overcoat with the longhair version having a slightly thicker undercoat.

With the La Perm being a fairly new breed, the Cat Fancier’s Association has recognized it, placing it in the Provisional Class. This class only recognizes two other cat breeds for show. If the La Perm manages to adhere and uphold to the breeds standards and type, it will eventually be introduced into the Championship Class.

Behavior and Characteristics
The La Perm is a muscular breed and well known for being an excellent mouse hunter as well as a cat who loves the outdoors. This would adhere to its ancestry of American Barn cats, although the La Perm does display the look of an Oriental breed. Although this breed is not a cuddly, quiet cat, it is an affectionate and playful one which makes it ideal for families looking for a pet cat or households that already have multiple cats.

Health Problems
With the gene pool of the La Perm containing a wide spectrum of offerings, it is no surprise that this breed is exceptionally healthy. Even with its excellent health history, it is important to note that a visit to the veterinarian for a full physical examination along with a series of vaccinations should still be implemented to ensure the safety and health of your cat.
