Norwegian Forest Cat Behavior, Facts and Health Care Problem
The Norwegian Forest Cat can only be described as special and unique. Originating in the chilly air of Norway in the early nineteen hundreds, this beautiful cat displays a thick and distinctive coat of fur. This breed of cat also comes with an incredible and fascinating ancestry as they were used as companions to the notoriously war-like Vikings as they ventured to sail around the world.
However, they were not just for companionship; these large cats were also put to work. The Norwegian Forest Cat is very well known for its extraordinary ability to hunt rodents. This allowed the Vikings food supply on the boats as well as in the villages to remain safe from pesky, unwanted vermon.
Appearance
With their unusual appearance, these cats are often mistaken for being snobbish and unsociable; however they are actually a friendly, affectionate, loyal and devoted breed. Their physical characteristics display a large, solidly built, muscular body, powerful long legs, a triangular shaped head and magnificent green eyes that always look alert despite their slight slant. Many have commented that the mighty Norwegian resembles the appearance of a wild and brilliant Lynx.
The tail of a Norwegian is as long as its body and displays an elegant layer of long luxurious hair. The Norwegian Forest Cat is available in several colors such as white and black as well as many different patterns including tortoiseshell, smoke, tipped, tabby, and silver tabby patterns.
Grooming
The long, luxurious coat of a Norwegian Forest Cat is long and does require a set grooming routine. Once or twice a week, it is very important to run a brush or comb through this cats hair in order to remove loose hair and dander as well as avoid gnarling, tangles and matt’s. If these problems do occur, it may be necessary to have your Norwegian shaved. This however can be very difficult on your cat and with the use of anesthesia, brings some potential health risks as well.
Behavior and Characteristics
This breed of cat is known for being a quiet, unassuming breed that is not thrilled with strangers. However, this breed is quite loving and devoted as well as protective of its family members. Being a quiet breed, the Norwegian makes a perfect addition for anyone living in apartments, condos or townhouses with paper thin walls. In addition, these cats make great family pets as they will on occasion seek the affection and attention of its owners.
People with jobs that require long hours will also be interested in this breed as it is content to be by himself as long as his owner provides attention during the hours he is home and keeps his bowl full of food. The Norwegian Forest Cat is not a breed that requires the company of additional cats to keep him company, although it will not turn up its nose to them.
The gentle nature and reputation for being a mighty hunter, combined with the fascinating ancestry and unique look, make the Norwegian Forest Cat a prize winning addition to anyone’s home.
