Persian Cat Behavior, Facts and Health Care Problem
With a graceful and beautiful flowing coat of fur, the Persian is by far the most recognized breed of cat. The distinct facial characteristics often give people the impression that these cats are standoffish and unsociable. However, the Persian displays a more laid back temperament, tolerant of people, children and other animals. This breed is quite self -contained and will make his presence known when he is ready for affection.
Appearance
This breed first originated in the eighteen hundreds, and although it is a strikingly beautiful breed, it is not the right breed for everyone. A distinctive facial appearance sets this breed apart from any other. The face of a Persian appears to be more inset into the head than the average breed. Large round eyes that are set quite far apart, a large, muscular body, short powerful legs, a flowing coat, short neck and a short bushy tail make up the physique of this elegant breed. Persian’s are considered a more large sized breed, typically weighing in at anywhere from eight to fifteen pounds.
Grooming
Owning a Persian requires lots of love and devotion where his care is concerned. Being a longhaired cat, Persian’s require a daily routine of brushing and combing in order to keep the coat smooth, silky and healthy. Any deviation from this routine will quickly result in the coat becoming gnarled, tangled and matted. If this occurs, the only answer is to have the cat shaved. The problem with this solution is that it is highly stressful on the cat as they must undergo anesthesia. The other important issue that arises when a Persian has to be shaved, is that the skin becomes exposed, leaving the cat susceptible to the chill of the fall and winter months
Along with the natural beauty of its full flowing coat, the Persian is also available in many colors and patterns including Black, Chocolate, Red, Blue, Lilac, Cream, Chinchilla, Silver, and White. Exquisite patterns available in this breed are tortoiseshell, shaded, smoke, tipped, tabby, silver tabby, and bi-color. It is important to note, that the White color in particular can come with blue, orange or a mismatched eye color. The White haired, blue eyed Persians are also quite well known for being prone to deafness.
Behavior and Characteristics
The Persian’s personality is one of a calm, relaxed, unassuming one, making it the perfect cat choice for apartment living as well as a pet for a loving family. Homes with other cats or dogs are also an equally good choice for the Persian. This breed will tolerate other animals and children, but if it finds them to be annoying, it will not fight, it will only retreat to its own private sanctuary.
Health Problems
For the most part, Persians are an overall healthy breed. However, there are a few common health issues that this breed is known for and must be considered before purchasing. Persians are known for developing kidney disease, respiratory problems due to the facial structure and reproductive problems.
If you enjoy the beautiful look of an elegant flowing coat, combined with a laid back, light hearted personality, you may just want to look into the magnificent Persian.
