Simple Dog Training Command – COME

As frustrating as they may seem at times, dogs are not trying to be difficult, they just don’t know what behavior it is you want from them. It is important that your dog sees you as alpha (leader), and this is achieved with moderate, firm force and consistency. Patience is the key when training the command ‘come’.

Dogs are curious, and want to explore. They will sniff, dig and chew, so reduce possible diversions by training in a spot that is as isolated as possible. A large, clear area in the backyard or a spacious, clutter free room is ideal.

Use a dog’s spontaneous behavior to your advantage. When they walk towards you, give a voice and hand command that you have chosen specifically. It is best to use a command and hand gesture that you will only use in training.

To begin, put the dog in the ‘sit’ position. Use the ‘stay’ command, then move away. When at the desired distance (beginning with only a couple of steps and slowly increasing the distance with training), give the chosen voice and hand command. If the dog behaves as directed, praise extensively. Do not praise for incomplete or incorrect behavior.

Continue to repeat, consistently using the same training method. If the dog won’t come, entice with a toy or treat.

Leash training can be used for slow or hesitant learners as a training technique. Once the leash is attached, repeat the training technique from above, making sure that the leash begins with some slack. If the dog will not come, tug the leash gently, but with enough force for the dog to notice and use your chosen voice and hand command.

In contrast, if you have a dog who comes too eagerly use a long leash or rope and wrap this around a tree or post. When the dog moves off without a command and gesture, pull on the leash and issue the ‘stay’ command. If a tree isn’t available, you can use a partner, but you need to be aware that the dog will be easily confused about whom to obey. It is always best, where possible, to do this training alone to minimize distractions.

Dogs cannot learn a command instantly, so practice, patience and consistency are required. Loosing your temper and speaking unkindly when the dog doesn’t follow a command correctly is unhelpful. Alpha status is best achieved by utilizing a firm voice, strong body posture and patience as you wait for understanding and obedience. It is not beneficial to use physical restraint or leading as a training method.

Utilizing praise after correct behavior will have dogs acting with obedience and eagerness to satisfy their owner. When needed, confirm your alpha status and make sure that your dog is the one ‘coming’ to you.
