Boxer Pups Facts and Health Problems Information
The Boxer is one of the best family dogs you can own. These dogs are wonderful with children and their families, but can be a strong guard against criminals. Where did the Boxer get its unique name? This breed will use its front legs when fighting, looking similar to a boxer. Soon after this breed arrived on the scene, it was quickly noted how great Boxers were with their families. These loving dogs are great companions as well. These dogs became very popular in the United States after men fighting in World War II brought some home with them.
Boxer Appearance
Although Boxers are a medium-sized dog, these animals have all the strength of a big dog. These dogs can weigh 50 to 80 pounds and are all muscle and energy. They have a wide face and broad chest and look similar to a Bulldog in the face. They have gorgeous brown eyes and will frequently manipulate their facial expressions and expressive eyes to get their owners attention.
Boxers come in a variety of colors, but generally, they should be fawn or brindle with a black mask face. The dog with white markings is flashy and not preferred among breeders. If the Boxer has more than a third of its body in white, it will be unable to compete in an AKC competition. Also, the white colored Boxers are more likely to develop deafness and additional health problems.
Boxer Characteristics
Boxers do not do well in apartments or small homes. These dogs require a lot of exercise and are non-stop. They never seem to tire out! For this reason, they need to exercise frequently and have a fenced-in yard. You will need to be sure that the fence is very high since the Boxer can easily jump over high fences.
Boxers generally do well with other animals, but may pick on a smaller dog or cat. You should neuter the Boxer at six months to prevent aggression towards other dogs. Small children get along great with Boxers, but they can have too much energy for toddlers and knock them over. After all, an energetic Boxer can knock over an adult human if he is very excited to see them!
Obedience classes are important for Boxers to teach them ways to channel their energy in appropriate ways. Puppy classes also help to socialize the dogs early on. This breed is easy to train since it is eager to please and will pick up commands quickly. They take well to agility tests, so this is something you might want to look into.
Boxer Grooming and Health Problems Information
Boxers require little grooming, although you should brush them once a week to remove dirt (they love mud!) and loose hair. Also, be sure their nails are short and ears are clean.
These dogs are great eaters and you can look into giving them “large dog” formulas. They are prone to hip dysplasia, although they have few other health issues. If you want a great family dog that is very devoted, the Boxer could be a great idea for you.
