Chihuahua Pups Facts and Health Problems Information

Watch just a little television and you will soon see the Chihuahua appear. A popular icon in movies like Men in Black and on the arms of celebutantes like Paris Hilton, the Chihuahua has an expressive face and wonderful personality that makes it a great pet for a number of people. They are one of the smallest dog breeds in the world and typically do well in warmer climates. Then again, many a Chihuahua has endured a doggy sweater to remain warm during those chilly winter months.

Appearance
The Chihuahua can weigh as little as one pound to as much as six. They are only roughly 5 inches tall. They come in a range of colors, including white, tan or a black and tan mix. They have an alert expression, big eyes and ears that stick straight up. There are both long and short-haired Chihuahua breeds.

Part of the AKC Toy Group, these dogs were specifically raised to be companions. They hate to be alone and are only happiest when surrounded by people and activity.

Chihuahua Characteristics
Chihuahua’s are excellent for apartments and have even been known to live comfortably in the cab of tractor trailer drivers. They do not take up much room and do not need a lot of exercise. Some owners will even train their Chihuahua to use a litter box for easier maintenance. They like to play outside and exercise on warm days.

If the Chihuahua has been accidentally hurt or has fear of being handled, they can get snippy with children or adults. They can also be spoiled and bossy, but this is a direct result of their owner’s indulgence. The Chihuahua has definitely been known to bully the other dogs in the house around, despite their size. They will fight with any dog of any size because they see themselves as big and as strong as a Pit Bull. They are a wonderful pint-size guard dog and will take on human intruders as well.

Chihuahuas need puppy obedience training to tone down their diva attitudes and self-centered behavior. Even a tiny boss can be a pain. Puppy classes will help your dog to learn the basics and also socialize the puppy at an early age. These dogs are very intelligent and do great with training and obedience tasks. Some will even go on to take agility classes.

Chihuahua Health Problems and Grooming
Due to their small size, Chihuahuas eat little, but these dogs are picky eaters, so you might find yourself spending as much on their food as a medium-sized dog. They are very delicate and can have difficulty eating dry food, which is hard on their teeth. They can have issues with dislocated jaws, epilepsy, rheumatism and fractures.

Short-haired Chihuahuas do not require much maintenance. The long-haired Chihuahuas require regular brushing and grooming, but only for about one time a week.
