Chow Chow Pups Facts and Health Problems Information

When a dog has a blue tongue, you typically have a serious problem on your hands. When a Chow Chow has a blue tongue, however, everything is normal and as it should be. Chow Chows are known for their black tongues with a sharp blue tint.

Appearance
Originally from China, the Chow Chow used to be used as a hunting dog. Asian sailors brought the dogs to England and their unusual appearance made them an instant hit. The are members of the Non-Sporting Group in the AKC.

Chow Chows weigh about 45 to 70 pounds. They have down-turned lips, which makes them always look angry. They have a tail that curls over its back and a thick double coat that is a range of colors. Standing at 17 to 20 inches tall, the Chow Chow can be red, black, blue, cinnamon or cream-colored.

Characteristics
Chow Chows do not have a lot of energy. They need more exercise than an apartment, however, and do well with consistent walks for exercise. A small fenced yard works great for them. However, whenever you are outside your home, be sure to keep your Chow Chow on a leash as they are often aggressive towards other dogs and sometimes strangers.

Chow Chows are extremely protective of their families and owners, but can be aggressive towards other pets and people they do not know. A good solution to this trait is early puppy obedience training which simultaneously socializes the dogs and gives them the training they need for the rest of their lives.

These dogs will often be stand-offish and aloof to strangers at best. They will dominate their owners, as well, whenever they can get away with it. An inexperienced dog owner is not a good fit with this dog, since they need someone who is firm and always follows through on the commands.

Health Problems and Grooming Issues
Despite their low energy, Chow Chows eat a lot. They require good food to keep their nutrition in balance. They will also require frequent brushing and grooming. Their double coats can be difficult to brush because they are so thick and just skipping one day can cause their fur to mat and tangle.

Due to their large coats, Chow Chows do not like the summer heat and can also suffer from hip dysplasia and have problems with their joints, specifically their knees.

Having one of these amazing pets near you can be a great decision for the right family.
