Golden Retriever Pups Facts and Health Problems Information

Golden Retrievers are known as the family dogs. These lovable, cuddly dogs are great companions and wonderful around children. They can also be excellent guide dogs and make incomparable best friends.

Appearance
The Golden Retriever is a big, muscular animal. They have a broad skull and a range of colors on their coat. They can be deep, honey colored to a light gold to an almost white color. The palest or darkest colors are considered least preferred and the white patches or markings can be disqualifications in shows. These dogs can weigh 55 to 75 pounds and stand 22 to 24 inches tall.

Characteristics
Originally bred to be working dogs, they are now members of the AKC’s Sporting Group. They have a lot of energy and require a lot of exercise. When they are less than 3 years old, these puppies can be nonstop. Actually, this trait is one of the reasons they are such excellent recovery animals, since they have a constant drive to keep going. They are also great seeing-eye or drug sniffing dogs. They need exercise and will get into plenty of trouble and mischief if left alone and bored.

Small children can get knocked over by an energetic and boisterous Golden Retriever puppy, so it pays to keep an eye on them while they are growing up and also warn the children. They are excellent family dogs, however, the puppies can be a handful and quite rowdy at times.

You will need to take your puppy to obedience classes to ensure that the dog gets all the training it needs. They can get used to other dogs and people and learn how to act outside and inside the home environment.

Golden Retrievers love to dig, which can be troublesome if you have a prized garden. Giving them an area that they are allowed to dig and chew shrubs can be a mutually beneficial compromise between owner and dog.

Health Problems and Grooming
Golden Retrievers are large dogs and will cost a lot to feed. They will need the large dog formula to ensure they are getting all the nutrition they need. These dogs are also prone to hip dysplasia as well.

Golden Retrievers need a frequent brushing of their coats to prevent tangles and matting. You will need to be especially careful behind the ears as well. If you groom often, you won’t have the issue of dog hair all over your furniture and floor as well! In addition, you can use this time to check for ticks after playing in the woods outside.

If you want a beautiful family pet that is smart and loving, the Golden Retriever is a great companion for you.
