Jack Russell Terrier Pups Facts and Health Problems Information

If you have ever met a Jack Russell Terrier, you know that these dogs have plenty of energy. From the Wishbone series to the popular sitcom Frasier, these dogs are everywhere. They are all ‘terrier’ and can be overwhelming to an inexperienced dog owner.

Appearance
The Jack Russell Terrier is also known as the Parson Russell Terrier because it was created by a parson, the Reverend Jack Russell. The dogs were specifically bred to chase down foxes and he wanted the dog to be small enough to fit in the fox holes.

A member of the Terrier Group, the AKC will actually call these dogs “Parson Russell Terriers” to differentiate them from the British version of the Jack Russells. The American version has longer legs, while its British cousin has shorter legs, requiring the distinction.

Small but strong, the Jack Russell Terrier has a bright appearance and is very alert. They have short, rough coats. These dogs are typically at least more than half white and the rest of their body has a combination of tan, brown and black markings over its body. They have a short tail that is always sticking straight up and is rarely still, but constantly wags in happiness. These alert dogs are typically 13 to 17 pounds and are 10 to 15 inches tall.

Characteristics
You would think that these dogs would do great in an apartment, but typically, these dogs have too much energy to sit still and do not do well in smaller spaces. The dog really sees himself as a big dog and will run around until he is thoroughly tired out. They need a securely fenced yard as the Jack Russell Terrier will dig, go over and around anything that is blocking them from exploring when they are bored. These dogs have even been known to climb trees!

Jack Russells love big, chaotic families as long as they get plenty of attention. They love playing games with kids, such as chasing down balls and playing fetch. Jack Russells definitely need training, however, as it helps to give them a direction with all of their energy. They will also help to socialize the puppies at an early age.

Health Problems and Grooming
Jack Russells are prone to deafness as well as other eye and ear problems. Overall, however, they are a healthy dog.

These dogs are not expensive to maintain as they require little food and if they are too hyper for you, you can ask for a lower protein diet that will help to calm them down slightly. The smooth-coated dogs do not need much grooming, but you will need to brush the rough-coated dogs at least one time a week.
