The Labrador Retriever is a powerful dog that is very dependable. They have a lot of stamina and can work or play for hour after hour. They weigh between 55 and 80 pounds and are 21 – 24 inches tall. These dogs are known for their happy eyes and round, wagging tail. They can come in a variety of colors, including yellow, chocolate or black. Black Labs are typically the most common variety. Part of the Sporting Group, these dogs were bred to spend hours with hunters, retrieving the game that they had trouble accessing. They love the water, which means they are great on boats, in lakes and even in the swimming pool. These dogs are known for jumping off a dock to go for a quick swim when they see their owners in the water or something else catches their eye! These dogs have plenty of energy and love to play. They are not great in apartments since they require a lot of room to play their games and run. The Lab loves a fenced-in yard, however. They also love going to dog parks to find other dogs to play around with and burn off some extra energy. Your reward for all this playtime will be a sleepy dog who doesn’t get into trouble because he’s bored and fidgety. Labrador Retrievers need healthy bones for all the running and swimming they do, so you will need to purchase large dog formula food for their nutritional needs. You will need to find food with plenty of protein if you are planning to use this dog for hunting or other working purpose. These dogs are perfect family pets, but be sure you meet both parents of your puppy to ensure that they have a good temperament and are not high-strung and difficult. You will want to wait until your children are steady on their feet before introducing a toddler and puppy as a growing Lab puppy can knock over a toddler in his exuberance at seeing a family member. They can also knock them over with just a clip of their strong tails. You need to be sure you train your Lab puppy at an early age and work on dog socializing while they are young as well. Labs can be a headstrong at times and taking them to obedience class will help to guide your dog to acceptable behavior. Grooming
Labs don’t need very much grooming, although you will want to brush their hair once a week for loose hairs and dirt. You will also want to check for ticks after they have been playing outside.
