Newfoundland Pups Facts and Health Problems Information

If you hear the name Newfoundland, you might be thinking of the country. However, there is a wonderful dog breed called the Newfoundland who is exclusively interested in keeping children from getting into trouble. These dogs have an innate desire to rescue people in danger. With a sweet, gentle nature and good looks, these dogs are great pets.

Appearance
The Newfoundland dog weighs 100 – 150 pounds, so it is a larger animal. They can be as tall as 28 inches. They have a waterproof double coat that comes in a variety of colors, including black, brown, gray, or a combination of black and white. These dogs have chocolate colored eyes that signal their sweet personality.

The Newfoundland dogs are part of the Working Group since these dogs are wonderful in rescue situations. They were often owned by lighthouse keepers in the past and their waterproof coat certainly came in handy with sea rescues.

Characteristics
The Newfoundlands don’t fit well in apartments mostly due to their size. With their huge bodies, they can be uncomfortable in smaller places, although they are not high-strung or in need of a lot of exercise. A fenced-in yard or regular walks with their owner is sufficient exercise for them each day.

The Newfoundland dogs are some of the sweetest dogs out there. They do need training, however, to teach them not to jump on people and knock them over when they are puppies because of their sheer size. They seem to have an instinctive understanding about being careful around other animals and children, however, and will avoid injuring them.

This instinct is just one of the reasons this breed is known as the gentle giant. They will sit quietly and watch until someone wants to play with them and then they will happily ditch their voyeuristic attitude for a good game.

Health Problems and Grooming
Any dog that weighs over 100 pounds is sure to eat a lot and the Newfoundland is no exception. These dogs can definitely increase your grocery bill, and will require a large dog formula to make sure they get all the nutrition they need. They might also require special vitamins and supplements to keep them as healthy as possible.

Despite their long coat, the Newfoundland does not require a lot of grooming. They have coarse hair that does not tangle easily and only require a brush about once a week. You will need to check their nails, teeth and ears as well to make sure they look good.

The Newfoundland might be the size of a small pony, but they are exceptional animals that can be great, loyal pets and excellent members of your family.
