Originally from China, the Shih Tzu was originally developed to be a lap dog and companion to the Chinese royalty similar to the Pekinese. The breed has been around since the 1800’s when it was developed during the reign of the Empress Dowager Cixi or Tz’u-shi, which is where the name comes from. These dogs are members of the Toy Group and were first registered in 1969. These dogs have a unique appearance and are very lively. They are small with a long, double coat. They have a wooly undercoat with a silky topcoat, which makes them look proud and regal. In addition, these dog have hair above its nose that grows up and makes a little topknot. There are a variety of sizes of the Shih Tzu and can be as tall as 11 inches. These dogs only weigh from 9 to 16 pounds and they are perfectly content in an apartment and town home. Characteristics
The dog does not need a lot of space, but the Shih Tzu can be quite active at times, while other times it can be lazy as well. If the Shih Tzu finds a great spot, it will lounge all day. It is up to the owner to make sure the dog gets regular exercise to keep them fit. The Shih Tzu is the perfect family dog because they can be playful and lively, but do not have an excessive amount of energy. They are cute and very affectionate, loves to be around other people and can be good with other pets. These dogs love to be with children so long as the child treats them well and not treat them roughly. Because of their reluctance to exercise, Shih Tzus can gain weight quickly. Grooming can be a daily occurrence with the Shih Tzu. They need to have daily grooming with a bristle brush. The topknot can be taken loose several times a week and brushed to avoid tangling. Check the dog’s ears and around the eyes to make sure they are clean. Shih Tzus have sensitive eyes and need to be kept clean and free from any matter. This dog is fairly hypoallergenic since it does not shed very much. The Shih Tzu can suffer from ear problems, eye issues and respiratory problems. They can also have a spinal disc problem because of their legs. Also, their teeth have a tendency to rot as well.
