Learn how to take your ferret on trips
If you are like many ferret owners, you love your dear pet and hate to leave him behind when you travel. Luckily, most ferrets are able to travel quite well when provided with the necessary preparations and packing. Whether you are taking your ferret to a show or another ferret friendly destination, here are some items to take along for your ferret.
Never take your ferret away from home without his medical records. If anything should happen on your journey, it is important that a veterinarian knows your ferret’s health history. Also be sure to take the number of your main veterinarian as well as the numbers of doctors and animal hospitals in the area of your destination.
Outfit your ferret in a comfortable cage or carrier for traveling. Be sure that the cage has a litter box, water bottle and feed dish. To prevent messes and injuries, attach the items to the floor or wall of the cage. Provide bedding on the floor of the carrier as well as a hammock or other bed for your ferret.
Take care to pack enough food for the duration of the trip. It is also wise to take bottles or jugs of water from your home even if your destination has water available. Your ferret will appreciate the familiar water. You will lessen his risk of catching an illness due to different minerals and chemicals in unfamiliar water. Also remember to have extra bedding for your ferret in case he makes a mess of his current bedding. Be prepared for any spills or messes with extra towels and cleaner. It is also wise to bring a hand disinfectant, especially if you will be around other animals. Always wash your hands before and after handling your ferret to prevent the spread of germs.
If possible, travel with a companion. He or she can help look after your ferret and make the trip more enjoyable. It is always helpful to have an extra set of hands in case of an emergency.
Lastly, if you are attending a show or ferret event, do not hesitate to add a name plate or sign to your ferret’s cage. Signs can be a fun way to introduce your ferret to others. Sometimes it is also important to post a warning, letting others know that they should not touch your ferret without your permission.
