Ferret Supplies - Ferret Feeding Bowls and Food Dispenser

Ferrets have a very fast metabolism rate. For this reason, they need to have food near them at all time. They have fast digestive systems and they will typically eat and process anything they’ve had to eat within a few hours. They will also need a lot of water to digest their food and stay hydrated. Without enough food and water, bad things can happen to your ferret.

Ferrets are only awake for typically six hours of the day, but they are nonstop energy when they are awake. They love to explore and move things around. They can tip over bowls filled with water and food or splash the water out of the bowl while they are playing around. If they do this, they could lose their nutrients.

For this reason, there are a lot of ferret gear items you can purchase to keep the ferret’s area clean and minimize the problems of spilled food and water.

There are hundreds of choices for buying ferret food gear on the market. You can find a range of water and food dispensers that solve your ferret food needs. You can find anything from a simple bowl, which is not a preferred method, to a heavy bowl that cannot be tipped over, even by a jumping ferret. Your bowl should definitely be made of non-breakable materials that the ferret cannot chew or bite off. After all, ferrets love to chew!

The bowl will also need to be clean and unable to rust. Wooden bowls might look good, but they can retain moisture, causing bacteria to grow. Cedar has a smell that is actually bad for ferrets, for example. Plastic, on the other hand, is never very good for any pet as it can harbor bacteria and a number of metal bowls can rush. You will need to find marble bowls since those are ideal for your pet – or change your bowls frequently.

There are automatic feeders that are a great solution for feeding your pet. There are J-feeders that are great because you can put a few days’ worth of food into the dispenser and know that your animal will be taken care of. These feeders will give the pet a little bit of food every day and monitor their consumption. It can be attached to the side of the cage and therefore unable to tip over. It will also prevent food spilling. There are auto feeders and gravity feeders as well.

You can find a great water dispenser that works in a similar fashion. Having a water dispenser is great because it will reduce the water spilling everywhere in the cage. You will need to choose something that cannot be tipped over, so most owners choose the ball-and-tube style. Ferrets will learn how to push up the ball and get a small amount of water. The ball will then return to the bottom of the tube, preventing water spillage.

Other dispensers have carbon filtration, liquid vitamin supplements and other additions that can help your ferret.

If your ferret is outside of its cage, you can get a heavy, crock bowl that is a common choice for owners. These work great, but you will need a rubber, non-scratching surface on the bottom to prevent the ferret from scratching your floor as it pushes the bowl around. You will need to prevent your ferret from chewing on this material, however.

No matter what food or water dispense your get, you will need to make sure it is clean and doesn’t have any mildew or bacteria growing on it. You will want to scrub it frequently with hot water and mild bleach whenever applicable to keep your ferret safe and healthy.
