Get Your Cat Comfortable with the Carrier

Many cat owners find themselves with a common complaint. Their cats may be very well behaved inside of their homes, and may even willingly allow their owners to pick them up in their arms. However when it comes time to take the cat to the veterinarian or in the car, they cannot get the cat to go into the cat carrier. Or, the cat may be forced into the carrier and meow the whole way to the vet. While many people may blame this behavior on the trip to the veterinarian, the truth of the matter is that the cat is more likely resisting the cat carrier. Luckily it is completely possible to acquaint your cat to the carrier to ensure smoother travels.

First and foremost, do not expect any cat to accept a bare and empty cat carrier. Think about how you like to make yourself comfortable, and take that into consideration when outfitting a carrier for your cat. It is best to put some bedding into the carrier to make it comfortable for your cat. You may even want to include a favorite toy or play item. Once you have the carrier inviting for your cat, place it in an area of your home that is frequented by your cat.

While you are playing or spending time with your cat, encourage him to enter the carrier by giving him treats and affections while he is in the cage. Then continue with regular playtime. As your cat begins to associate the carrier with playtime, and not unpleasant car trips, he will become more and more comfortable with spending time in the carrier. Over time, you should be able to close the door to the carrier and let your cat spend short periods of time within the carrier. Eventually, begin picking the carrier up and walking through your home with your cat inside. Your cat should get to the point where you can take him for car rides within the carrier. Take trial rides short distances from your home before traveling all the way to the veterinarian.

When going through these steps, remember to remain patient. If your cat resists any stage in the process, slow down and go back a step. Advancing too quickly will cause more stress to your cat, and prevent him from overcoming his aversion to the carrier. It may take a great deal of time, but you should be able to make your cat comfortable with trips in the cat carrier.
