Breed Info - Golden Retrievers Temperament and Behavior

The Golden Retriever is one of the most recognizable and friendliest dogs in our culture. Watch television or read a magazine and you are sure to see a happy Golden Retriever! And there's a great reason why this is the case, Golden Retrievers are some of the best dogs out there!

Golden Retrievers are very easy to train. They are super smart and sociable with other dogs and animals. They will happily go outside because they love to exercise. These dogs were originally Russian circus dogs in the mid-19th century and they have been trained and bred in their nature to retrieve balls, jump fences and a range of other fun activities.

Golden Retrievers are easily socialized and they usually love other people and other animals. They will typically adapt well to children and other pets, although every dog is an individual. These dogs will still need training, however. They can be territorial at times and will sometimes bark or chase around other animals, sometimes just for sport. If it's a stranger, they might do the same thing.

However, these dogs are so friendly they will never attack a stranger. If you try to train them to attack a person, in fact, it will probably not stick with the dog. They will definitely alert you to a new person, but they will also bark at random occasions as well. However, this bark is a greeting sign, not a warning. They love to bark and play-nip, but having a Golden Retriever bite you is almost unheard of completely.

Golden Retrievers are some of the most intelligent breeds on the market. There are a variety of behaviors that they can do moderately well. You will easily housebreak these animals and they will definitely let you know when they need to go outside. Playing fetch is almost automatic with the Golden, as well as playing tug of war. They can also easily be taught how to sit and beg, and more!

Goldens can love to tug their leash, however, and it can be difficult to break them of that habit. They are eager to please and love being next to their owner's side, but they wil have difficulty waiting and will often want to pull you ahead. Like any training, you will need to teach them over a few weeks to stop with this behavior.

These dogs are happy and have a lot of energy. You should also give them plenty of room and plenty of exercise. If they are inside with too much energy, they need to run around a lot. Inside, they can get into a lot of trouble without even meaning to. Their tags can wag too excitedly, knocking over things on the table by accident.

Golden Retrievers prefer to have a lot of company and do not like to be left alone for too long. If no one is at home during the day to exercise your Golden, you might want to think about getting another dog for company for the Golden Retriever.

If you want a friendly, active family dog, the Golden Retriever is one of the best bet.
