Essential German Shepherd Supplies and Gears
German Shepherds are known for the agility, the strength and their keen intellect. When it comes to training your dog, you must keep these special qualities in the forefront of your mind.
When you are walking your dog on a regular walk, a collar and leash is just fine. However, you will need a harness during training. A dog that goes into attack mode will strain against a leash and possibly snap it – or at least snap it out of its owners’ hand. A chest harness is safer for the dog and it is easier for the owner to exert control on the animal.
German Shepherds can bark a lot. Sometimes it can be necessary to strap on a muzzle to silence them. There have been incidents where the German Shepherds have bitten others, giving them an unwarranted reputation as an aggressive dog. The not-fully trained German Shepherd might be nervous and will bite out of fear in public places. The muzzle therefore, protects the dogs and the humans nearby.
Muzzles can be made out of either leather or nylon and there are certain styles that allow the dog to partly open his mouth. This way, they can drink water with the muzzle on, while preventing its jaws from fully opening.
German Shepherds love to chew, like most dogs. They prefer a good rawhide bone, but they will need a lot of variety to let them practice while they are playing. Denta-bones can be great for their health, as will Kongs filled with peanut butter or cheese.
If the chicken or beef bone is smaller and weak, don’t give it to your German Shepherd because it could splinter and hurt your dog. The larger bones are safe because they have been cooked. The best solution is to get a commercially-supplied bone that is designed to be chewed safely.
A great way to keep your German Shepherd alert and mentally aware is through an obstacle course. These courses will keep the dog’s mind fresh, while simultaneously exercising them. A search-and-rescue dog, for example, will often need to jump over hurdles and handle complex situations, so these courses provide excellent training.
The obstacle course should be able to change, providing tunnels, hurdles and more for your animal. There should be a mixture of plastic, metal and wood to change up the circumstances for the dog. They should be able to balance on a wooden beam or slick metal surface without losing the trail.
