Abyssinian
The Abby is one of the oldest breeds of guinea pigs and goes back to the 16th century. They do not originate from Ethiopia and have distinctive rosettes, which are swirls of hair that form a spiral of fur.
The Abby also has a mustache that makes them look comedic. They can be found in a variety of colors, including the satin breed variety. Of course, with all Satin varieties, their hair is very soft, fine and has a typical kind of sheen to it.
American
When you think of a guinea pig, you are most likely thinking of the American style, also known as the English cavy. With short and sleek hair, they have the chunky body, blunt nose and can come in a variety of colors. They come with a satin coat with a glossy feel, dense fur that is very soft and has a translucent look.
Peruvian
The Peruvian guinea pig has long-hair and is from South America. The Andes Mountains can get very cold, so their long hair helps in the cooler climates. They have smooth hair that can grow up to 17 inches long and can come as a Satin with more glossy fur. Typically, the hair will only grow to about 14-16 inches, but longer varieties are available.
Silkie or Sheltie
Yet another long-hair variety, the Silkie has hair that sweeps back from its face. Their face is clearly visible and shows its clearly marked forehead. The Silkie has fine hair and is softer than the Peruvian’s. The Satin version has the sheen and soft texture.
Teddy
The Teddy is one of the more adorable guinea pigs that has short, wiry hair and whiskers. They have kinked hair which moves back into place after being brushed. They look like the American breed with a Roman and blunt nose.
Texel
The Texel is one of the more unusual and unique guinea pigs. This animal has long ringlets for hair and the curls will cover the entire body, including the back, belly, front and rear. These ringlets can be up to several inches long.
You can find an array of guinea pig species and styles for your tastes. Each type of guinea pig has a variety of colors, including the black-and-white Dalmatian, the Tortoise Shell, the Dutch and many more.
