Guinea Pigs Accessories – Choosing Toys for your Cavy

Although docile and slow, guinea pigs are not totally sedentary. They love to explore, burrow and play with animals and other things in their environment. If you keep your guinea pig busy while you are home, it will keep them mentally aware while you are away from them. Keeping them stimulated is an important way to keep your cavy healthy and happy. If your guinea pig has nothing to do all day, they will become bored and lethargic.

Guinea pigs and their owners love small houses made of plastic or wood with a number of entrances and exits. These homes are very amusing for the pig and its owner as well. There are a number of ramps and levels for the guinea pig to explore and get a lot of great exercise.

Another great choice for guinea pigs is a maze that can be easily built from cardboard. You can create panels that come in a range of sizes and colors to make cage dividers, tunnels and much more. Look for pre-made wooden tunnels as well for an additional thing to add to your home for excitement.

Guinea pigs love to burrow. You can find a number of bedding materials that will help you let the animal make its own tunnels. Some of these products include EcoFresh, CareFresh and Megazorb and can offer plenty of support for these tunnels. Make sure you let the material air before you use them and keep an eye on excess dust, which can be harmful to the animal.

Unlike hamsters, guinea pigs don’t like walking wheels. They are not as active as hamsters and these wheels can be bad for their feet. They like to walk and ramps are great for that purpose. You can find different plastic pieces that can be snapped together to provide a great ramp for your animal.

Look for other toys to keep your guinea pigs healthy. Balls and rubberized plastic toys to chew on are all great choices. Guinea pig’s teeth continually grow throughout their lifetime so chew toys are a great option. With toys around, they won’t destroy their bedding, house or cage walls.

You will also need a cage to transport your guinea pig to the vet. You don’t need much more than a mailbox-style enclosure or small cage to carry your cavy. You won’t need anything very big to prevent them sliding around in the carry-case.

Be careful that your guinea pigs can overheat if the temperatures outside get too hot. When the temperatures rise above 90F and the humidity rises above 70%. Unfortunately, the summertime often has these temperatures, so you will need to keep an eye on your animal. Putting on a small fan can help keep the animal safe and cool. Any small fan will work, but make sure that it’s low-powered so that it gives just the right amount of air for the guinea pig. Battery powered fans can be a great choice since they aren’t too intense. Find the right accessories for your guinea pig to keep them healthy and happy.
