Heavy Horse Breeds Info and Introduction

Most of the people that want a horse will want one of the light horse breeds. However, there are many other options for you to choose from. Heavy horses used to fight wars, pull farm equipment and other heavy loads. These horses have been the essential animal for hundreds of farms over the centuries.

Heavy Horse Breed Overview
Here are two main types of heavy horses. These are the draft horse and old war horses. Draft horses are some of the most popular heavy horses and immediately recognizable by popular culture. Heavy horses like the draft horse have always been known to help out on the family farm or pull wagons.

If you have ever seen the Budweiser wagon on parades or seen their horses on television, you will know what a draft horse looks like. The Budweiser horses are Clydesdale horses and are excellent at pulling heavy loads. They are very sweet-natured and gentle horses.

Another great draft horse is the Perceron, which is just slightly smaller than the Clydesdale. They are just as powerful as the Clydesdale, however. These horses are very calm and extremely intelligent, which makes them great for a calm cart horse. They only come in two different colors, however, of gray or black.

There are other excellent heavy horse choices, including the Belgian, the Suffolk Punch and the Shire if these heavy horses don’t appeal to you. Shires and Suffolk Punch horses are somewhat rare, but great horses when you can find them. The Belgian horses are more popular and are frequently used by Amish farmers.

The best horse known as a war horse is a breed called the Lipizzaner. They are known for their dramatic and spectacular performances. They travel around the world to dazzle audiences with their style and tricks. They have performed for everyone from royalty to school children, but these horses are very rare and they are mostly found only in Austria.

Pony Overview
When you picture a pony, you most likely are thinking about a Shetland Pony. These calm and stocky little ponies have been recognized and loved for generations by children who ride on their backs. These ponies are very easy-going and sweet, although when they are young, they have been known to be a bit more ornery.

When the child is too big to fit on a Shetland Pony, they can graduate to a Welsh or Connemara Pony. The Cob is a type of Welsh pony that can easily carry teens or adults on their backs. The Connemara pony, on the other hand, is smaller, but can still take on smaller adults or teens.

No matter which type of horse you prefer, there are plenty for you to choose from. Be sure to research your future breed to ensure you are getting the exact right horse for your specific needs.
