Horse Riding Events - How to Participate and Compete in Them
Competing in events can be a great way to spend time with your horse outside of the usual riding and relaxing. Competing can be a great way to reward your horse for its super skills and experience. When you compete with your horse, you are able to have a closer relationship with your horse while simultaneously improving your own personal riding skills. You can compete in a variety of ways, including hurdle jumping, rope calves to complicated dressage stunts. No matter what you are interested in, you can find a great horse competition for you and your favorite animal.
Most of the time, if you think about horse competitions, you are thinking about the hunt seat sport. This sport has two different events, including the flat classes and the jumping classes. Flat classes are when you are judged by the way you and your horse work on the ground. As the name suggests, jumping classes are judged by your horse’s ability to jump and how gracefully he does that.
You will want to shop for a snaffle bit, a hunt seat snaffle bridle and a hunt seat saddle if you are competing in hunt seat sports. This equipment will help you through your competition. In addition, you will need a white riding shirt, breeches, wool jacket for riding, boots and a helmet. Your breeches and jacket will need to be a dark color, such as black or blue so that the audience notices the horse, not your wardrobe.
If you love to work on complicated routines with your horse, you will enjoy the dressage events and showcases. You will need to have a lot of patience and time to put in to make sure your competition goes smoothly. These dressage events are typically demanding and very challenging for both rider and horse. You will be very impressed with the overall beauty of this competition, however.
You will need dressage equipment to compete in these events, including a dressage saddle, bridle and snaffle bit. You will also need to wear the appropriate wardrobe of a white shirt, stock tie, white breeches, black dress boots, black jacket and a black derby hat. Everyone will look the same, although beginners are sometimes shown in tan breeches and a hunt cap instead.
Flashy horses and riders love the saddle seat events. This is a great way to show off your horse’s flair. There are two types of saddle seat events, including the equitation and the pleasure events. The equitation event will have you judged on your seat and ability to control your horse. The spotlight is more on you. In the pleasure show, the spotlight is put on the horse as the horse has to obey commands with a variety of style and grace. You will need a show saddle and double bridle for these events. You will be wearing a white shirt, jodhpurs, a saddle seat coat, jodhpur boots and a derby.
There are also Western pleasure, equitation and horsemanship classes for you to choose from. These are similar to their English counterparts. There are also rodeo events, such as barrel racing, pole bending, calf roping and reining. You will need to work closely with your horse for these skills and you can dress the part of a cowboy with a western-style shirt, jeans, chaps and cowboy boots. You will need a saddle and hackamore bridle as well.
Finally, there are also cross-country jumping, show jumping and events that focus on speed as well.
