Horse Stable Blankets Selection Guide and Buying Review

Horse blankets are used for a variety of reasons. For this reason, there are a lot of different horse blanket styles and materials. Which type you will get will depend on what you need the horse blanket for. You can use the blankets for cooling down, sheltering the horses from weather and protecting them from annoying bugs.

Most people will choose a traditional stable blanket for their horse blanket needs. They are worn typically when the horse is in the stable or an enclosed area. If your horse is old or sick, there are also thick, quilted style to better insulate the animal, but you will once again want to make sure that the horse is in an enclosed area. If your horse has recently been clipped, they might prefer a lighter blanket. You can have your blankets designed in the color of your farm or area and also get them monogrammed with your stable’s initials to ensure that these blankets stay with your horses on your grounds.

You will want to use a turn out blanket if your horse needs protection from the cold, but will also be spending time outside in the pasture. These blankets have waterproof materials that will help the horse if they decide to roll around in the wet grass as they prevent twisting. The turn out blanket, however, is essentially the same as the stable blanket.

Most horse professionals and enthusiasts do not think of the cooler as a type of blanket. They will call it a sheet. The cooler is typically given with the racehorse. Race horses will need to have a cooler to keep them from catching a chill after they cool down from a race or hard workout. Unless your horse has strenuous workouts that have them sweating a lot, your horse will not need a cooler. If you do put a cooler on your animal, you will need to stay nearby so that you can quickly take it off once the animal has relaxed. Otherwise, the sheet can become twisted with dangerous and potentially fatal results.

You should look into buying an anti-sweat sheet for your horse if you use a cooler for him. An anti-sweat sheet is a fitted sheet that fastens like a stable blanket. In this way, you can leave your horse in an enclosed area with an anti-sweat sheet and have less to worry about for a few minutes. You cannot leave your horse alone in his stall for an extended period of time because the horse’s joints and muscles could stiffen if he does not cool down appropriately and for this reason, he will need to have someone watching him carefully.

If your horse is constantly being attacked by insects like flies, you can add a flysheet. A flysheet will help your animal be protected from horse flies, but it is made with a light material so they won’t struggle under it either.
