Horse Tack Selection Guide and Buying Review

If you want your horse to be a great horse that is superbly trained, you will want to look into special tack equipment to get the job done. You might be able to train your horse with the equipment that you have now, but if you look into getting more specialized equipment, the process will be easier and have a higher chance for success.

At the very least, you will need a halter, a bridle, a bit, a saddle and a lead rope. These are things your horse should always have. In addition, you will need a longe line, a longe whip, a good pair of leather gloves and a longe cavesson.

If your horse is just learning the basics, you will be using the halter, which every horse should have. The halter is the most important piece of tack that you have. You will be using it at the beginning of training and throughout the length of your animal’s life. Halters should be loose fitting and adjustable to fit your horse’s particular size. You shouldn’t have a problem finding one that will fit your horse. After the halter, you will want to use a lead rope to help train your horse. You will also use this piece of tack the length of your horse’s life and training.

You will need to decide if you want to train your horse to accept the saddle and bridle before you actually get into it. You will need to shop for a longeing tack If you do. In this way, you can control your horse as you train him on the ground instead of from the saddle. Using the longeing tack, you can teach the horse how to walk, trot, canter, back up and turn. From here, you can get him used to wearing a saddle and bridle before you jump on his back.

You will also need a longe line with your longeing equipment. Made of cotton, the line is typically 25 to 30 feet. The horse can travel in a sixty-foot wide circle. You will want a good pair of leather gloves here so that you don’t get rope burn while training your horse with the longe line.

You can use a halter or a bridle with a longe line next. Or, if you want, you can use a longeing cavesson with a longe line. If you use a halter, that’s fine, but the longeing cavesson has more padding to make your horse feel more comfortable. It also has extra rings to attach the longe line very easily.

You might also want to get a longe whip. Don’t worry; the whip is not used to strike your horse. It’s a way to give him a tap or a nudge when you aren’t standing right next to him. It’s more like an arm extension that a form of punishment, so don’t be upset.

Finally, if your horse is already trained, of course, you will not need to buy any of this training equipment. Most horse owners have it on hand, however, because a horse can use a refresher every once in awhile. You can also use this equipment to help your horse if he has been injured as a way to build his strength again.
