Regular Horse Grooming Overview

In order to keep your horse looking sleek and shiny, you will need to groom your horse regularly. This is not just for appearance sake but for your horse’s health as well. Grooming a horse on a regular basis will help to reduce medical problems, especially with their hooves.

A well-trained animal will always need to be reminded that you have complete control over there, especially since they are so big and strong. Remember, even the most well-behaved horse you have can get scared by a strange noise. You will need to walk into carefully and make sure that your horse is tied up and attached to both cross ties before you start to groom him. If you don’t have cross ties in your stable, install them immediately because if you groom them without cross ties and your horse gets scared, he can trap you against one of his walls.

If you have a large stable, the owner of the horses will rarely groom the horse. Instead, you will have special employees that are there just to take care of the horses. If you are going to be riding your horse frequently, you will need to comb its coat regularly. By combing its coat on a consistent basis, especially after a run, you will get rid of all the dirt, loose hair and other debris that might have gotten on his body. If you do not do this, your horse can develop saddle sores, which is when a saddle is placed on top of a dirty coat. It rubs against the dirt and irritates the horse’s skin. Saddle sores can prevent you from riding with your horse in the future, so it pays to look at his coat now.
