Household Dog Dangers

Dogs have a tendency to eat just about anything and everything that they come across.  In most cases, this ‘eating style’ may only cause your dog some slight discomfort.  However, there are many other items and food that are common in every household that can be extremely dangerous and deadly to your dog should he ingest any of them.  Therefore, you should take your dog to the Vet immediately should he ingest any of the following:

1) Antifreeze: It is sad to know that most people do not realize that common antifreeze kills many pets each year. It smells and tastes very sweet to your dog which is very appealing to him.

2) Chocolate: Chocolate contains a substance called obromine which is toxic to dogs. Baking chocolate and dark chocolate is especially dangerous as well. Do not eat give your dog any candy to eat either.

 3) Bleach: Regular household bleach is extremely toxic to dogs. Keep all products containing bleach out of the way of your dog.

4) Tylenol: As little as two regular strength Tylenol tablets can kill a small dog. If you think your dog is in pain, rather take him to the Vet than give him Tylenol. Human medication should never be administered to any animal.

5) Batteries: All alkaline batteries are toxic to dogs. However, if your dog ingests a watch battery, it can cause a potentially fatal ulceration in your dog’s stomach within 12 hours.

6) Moth Balls: Moth balls contain an insecticide that causes central nervous system excitement and seizures and are therefore very dangerous to dogs.

7) Fabric Softeners and other laundry detergents: Most all household detergents are toxic to dogs at one level or another, but fabric softeners are the most lethal.

8) Mouthwash: Some mouthwash that is on the market today, contains boric acid which is highly toxic to dogs. Symptoms of poisoning by mouthwash include vomiting, drooling, seizures, and coma.

9) Peach Pips: Just as with most fruits, the pips are toxic to dogs. Signs of poisoning include drooling, vomiting, and lethargy.

10) Household Plants: Many common and popular household plants are highly toxic to dogs. A partial list of toxic plants includes poinsettias, lilies, ferns, devil’s ivy, aloe, and ivy.
