Parrot Training No-No’s!

6 January 2009 505 views No Comment

Does your Parrot do thinks that are just plain naughty? Did you know that your response will forever change your parrot’s attitude towards you?

Even though there are times that your parrot behaves in such a way that will make you angry, there are a few parrot rules to remember when responding:

·         Never hit your parrot! Parrots are extremely fragile creatures and even the slightest bit of force will cause severe injury and possibly even death. Also, physically abusing a parrot can lead to psychological problems, and can actually promote more aggression and viciousness in your parrot.

·         Never hold a grudge. Parrots are very intelligent and sensitive creatures. If you do have to show your disapproval with your parrot’s behavior, make sure the lesson is short and sweet. Prolonged negative attention can cause undue emotional stress for your parrot.

·         Never compromise your parrot’s health. Punishing a bird by withholding its food is never the right way to deal with any behavior problem. Not only is that cruel, but it could also cause serious physical and emotional damage to your parrot.

Instead, it is best to respond in a proper manner to your parrot’s naughtiness. Therefore you should keep the following steps in mind:

·         Use the ‘step up’ command and make your parrot step up onto your hand and hold him at eye level.

·         Be as animated as possible. Parrots are quite capable of picking up on facial expressions, and will quickly get the idea as long as your body language expresses your dislike for his actions.

·         Be sure to speak softly and sternly. Try to use a tone of voice that is low and not too loud.

·         Once you are finished, put your parrot back onto his cage or perch for a time out. Wait a few minutes and then go back and interact playfully with him so that he will know that you are no longer upset with him, and that he is now being a good bird.

Just like with humans, parrots are individuals, and some may catch on quicker than others might. Try not to become discouraged if your parrot’s behavior doesn’t start to change immediately. Remember, that if you are consistent with your training methods, then your parrot will soon learn what is expected of him.

By just having patience, and showing your parrot lots of TLC, your parrot will be acting like an angel in no time.
