Playtime with Ferrets
Ferrets are highly energetic and creative creatures. In the wild, they have ample room to run and cause mischief. However in a domestic setting, it is difficult for ferrets to release their energy unless their owners let them out of the cage on a daily basis for playtime. Even when out of the cage, it is important that a ferret owner play with their pet ferret. Playtime will keep your ferret both mentally and physically stimulated, which serves many benefits.
Human contact helps to decrease a ferret’s stress level. Additionally, mental and physical stimulation also works to keep your ferret healthy and stress-free. Your ferret will reap great physical benefits from regular, interactive playtime including improved health and well-being. However your ferret’s mental state will also benefit from the interaction. When your ferret is able to play and interact, he does not feel the urge to make his own fun by getting into trouble. Your house will be more peaceful, and your ferret will be more content overall.
Oftentimes, you can play chase with your ferret. Keep in mind a simple game of tag, chasing after your ferret and allowing your ferret to run around. Ferrets also enjoy a playful wrestle or tussle. Be gentle with them, but also playful, and they will appreciate the attention.
Additionally, provide your ferrets with toys so that he does not feel the need to find his own toys. Old planters filled with dirt (but no plants) will make a great toy for your pet ferret. Hosing from the hardware store also makes a fun tunnel for your ferret. Your ferret might also enjoy a shallow pan full of water for splashing.
Make playtime regular and lengthy. And when you do return your ferret to the cage, be sure that he has a comfortable cage to return to. Make sure it is large enough for ample movement, especially if you are housing more than one ferret.
