Prepare for a Ferret Show
Ferret shows are often fun and exciting. Participants have the chance to socialize with other ferret owners and gain recognition for their own ferret. Most ferret shows judge the ferrets based on a variety of characteristics. Some of the characteristics are physical, such as the condition of the coat, teeth, nails and ears. However, judges also take a ferret’s temperament into account. Although each show is different in the way it is organized and judged, there are steps you can take to get your ferret into great condition for a show.
The best way to ensure a healthy coat on your ferret is to provide him with a high quality diet, full of protein and fat. The ferret’s coat usually reflects his overall state of health. Take excellent care of your ferret and his coat will respond accordingly, taking on a beautiful thickness and shine. As all ferret owners know, ferrets can be messy animals. Bathe your ferret monthly to keep him clean. However, avoid bathing more frequently as you will dry out his skin and coat. For best results, use a specialized ferret shampoo. However if you cannot find one that suits your liking, a baby shampoo is often gentle enough for your ferret as well. Take care to avoid getting any soap or shampoo into your ferret’s eyes.
Clean your ferret’s ears regularly to prevent a build-up of wax and debris. While some people use Q-tip to clean the ears, it is better to simply use an ear cleaning solution. It is too easy to harm your ferret’s tiny ears with a Q-tip, so avoid them whenever possible. Purchase a special ferret toothbrush to routinely clean your animal’s teeth. You may want to schedule a professional cleaning called scaling if the teeth are especially dirty or full of plaque. Remember that a solid diet also helps to prevent dental problems, which is even more reason to provide your ferret with the highest quality food. Trim your ferret’s nails regularly to keep them short and tidy. Be cautious when cutting near the quick of the nail, where the blood supply begins. It is very painful to cut this point so end your trimming before you reach it.
Last but not least, remember that judges value a pleasant and well behaved ferret. Handle your ferret on a daily basis and provide him with plenty of playtime to make him happy and encourage a great temperament.
