Rabbit Selection – How to Choose From a List of Rabbit Breeds

Those looking for a rabbit as pet may be surprised to find so many varieties of rabbits available. Through selective breeding, domestic rabbits are of notably different varieties. Currently, a list of rabbit breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders stand at about 50 varieties, though the numbers are actually more. The choice of a pet rabbit is entirely on ones own preference in terms of an emotional bond. After all, your bunny is just for you to cuddle up or entertain you by its playful activities. However, they provide your garden with excellent manure with their feces.

From Americana to Vienna, rabbit breeds are interestingly varied. Britannia Petite that weigh as little as a few pounds and German Gray Giant with a whooping 23lbs, the varieties are quite amazing. In terms of appearance again, there is quite a lot of variations like the long eared, short eared, or based on color they could be white, brown, gray, bluish gray and jet black. One could also choose between Angora, a rabbit breed with long, luxurious fur or Mini rex, with comparatively shorter hair.

You can make the best choice if you could know a few facts and analyze them before selecting one. If your option is to find a rabbit that your child would play with and carry around, you may want a light weighted and easy going one, and not a 20lb nervous rabbit, right? It has to be noted that each rabbit, beyond their physical features, vary in temperament as well.

When it comes to the varieties based on fur, again each breed demand appropriate care. There are breeds that shed more fur and those which shed minimum or hardly any fur noticeably. Few may need to be brushed everyday for optimal health, while few other breeds can do with very less brushing, say once a week or lesser based on the breed. Choices based on colors are another major consideration. Some may prefer rabbits with traditional appearance like the white Dutch or simple black, whereas few others my Black silver Martin with a fine, dark sable.

But beyond the appearance, it is important to consider few other factors based on the environment it is going to live as well. If you are from the country side and planning to let the rabbit enjoy your back yard, you must choose that can blend to such open area and could avoid predators when you aint rabbit sitting. Or you may be looking for a rabbit that could find itself comfortable to the indoor space of your condo. Or you may want to decide whether you would get comfortable with a few weeks old, newly weaned one or a mature one to identify their individual personality. In either case there are advantages as well as disadvantages.

The average life expectancy of rabbits is about 10 years, hence to find a pet that lives with you for so long should be chosen after reasonable analyses of all the factors mentioned above. With such a huge list of rabbit breeds, ultimately what matters is the level of comfort you and your pet rabbit share with each other.
