Safety Rabbit Home Care - How to Rabbit Proof Your Home

When you decide to choose a rabbit as your pet, you are expected to be prepared to invite both positives and negatives related to it. Rabbit’s teeth never stop growing and one of its natural instincts to control this trait is through constant chewing or gnawing. It chews up everything in its reach from furniture to wires or anything lying on the floor.

This damage is often irreversible to the pet owners. There are some methods to tip the odds in your favor instead of getting rid of your favorite pet. It is not possible to control the rabbits from this habit. However, it is possible to redirect the gnawing instinct into ways that are beneficial to the rabbits while avoiding damage to your belongings.

In terms of safety the electrical cords has to be kept out of reach since chewing the cords not only ruins the cord but are fatal to the rabbits. To eliminate this potential danger it is vital that everyone in the house remembers not to leave the electrical cords in the floor all the time and most importantly when the bunnies are left out of cage to explore the house.

It is also a better idea to permanently tuck up the wires out of sight but it has to be remembered that rabbits can squeeze into smaller spaces. If it is impossible to keep the wires out of reach the next possibility is to cover the cords with hard plastic or aluminum foils which the rabbits do not prefer to chew. Even cord coverings similar to spiral cable wrap can be opted for to protect the cord and to keep the rabbits from biting it.

The rabbits’ next target is houseplants. They are herbivorous animals and it’s their natural instinct to explore plants. Even when the rabbits are fed enough they still forage by exploring the plants whenever they can. The results may be the damage to plants, untidy surrounding and sometime it may be fatal to the rabbit if the plants are toxic to their system. So it is better to keep the plants out of reach from the rabbits.

The furniture at your house has to be protected. Rabbits chew on furniture that is reachable to them, like the legs of couch and table and so on. You could wrap the legs of the furniture with PVC pipe. Or if you are concerned about the appearance of the furniture, you may opt for decorative wood or metal coverings to keep them from chewing the legs of the furniture. There is another method to laminate the furniture legs to protect your furniture from rabbit gnawing.

Supervising the rabbits is the best option. It is not a wise idea to startle them since it stresses out the bunny and may even result in more chewing. Providing them with toys are the best options that are inexpensive and healthy as well. Also it is important not to expose objects that are harmful like toilet papers, cleaning chemicals and so on. A little precaution keeps your pet happy and protects your home.
