Find out what to expect from a ferret show
Part of the fun of having a pet ferret is joining the ferret community. Ferret shows are a great way to meet others who share your interest in ferrets. At a ferret show, you have the opportunity to show your ferret to others while seeing everyone else’s ferrets as well. However before you head off to a show, be sure to fully prepare yourself and your ferret for the experience.
Most ferret shows require that you have your ferret up to date on his vaccinations before allowing his entrance into the show. Usually, this requirement includes distemper and rabies vaccination from the last year. Be sure to take your ferret’s health records with you to the show. If a show does not require the vaccinations, you may want to avoid attending it with your ferret. Choose a show that has health regulations in order to keep your ferret safe and healthy. Also monitor the health of your own ferret in the weeks leading up to the show. If he appears to come down with even a mild cold or flu, consider by passing the show. An unhealthy ferret has a greater chance of developing a more serious illness in times of stress or exposure to new germs.
Try to find a reputable show that clean and sanitary. Be sure that the judges are known for washing in between handling different ferrets. Racing tubes and runs should also be sanitized between ferrets. If the show holds bag races, make certain that each ferret gets a brand new bag.
Judging within each ferret show can vary from event to event. Many times, ferret shows are organized by different ferret related groups. Each group often has their own set of standards for judging. Usually, ferrets are broken into groups based on color or age for judging purposes.
Regardless of which type of show you enter, be sure that your ferret is clean and healthy. Talk to the show organizers ahead of time to assure the same from the grounds, judges and other participants. Lastly, have fun and good luck!
