Why Your Ferret Bites
Most pet ferrets are well-trained by their owners and do not often bite human body parts. However in the wild, ferrets are natural biters. All domestic ferrets maintain their biting instincts even when living under the roof of a house. If you have a pet ferret that bites, it is important to look at why they are biting. Once you know the cause, it will be easier for you to re-train your ferret to avoid biting you, and other people.
Many ordinarily well-behaved ferrets bite when they are feeling stressed. Take a look at your household and your ferrets living conditions. Are they stable and healthy? It is important to provide your ferrets with a comfortable environment, or else they will feel anxious and bite in a reaction to their discomfort. Additionally, ferrets will bite when they feel threatened or territorial. Respect your ferret’s cage, and you will notice a difference in his behavior.
Other ferrets may bite when they are feeling sick. If your ferret is irritable and trying to bite you, consider calling your veterinarian if you cannot find other reasons for this behavior. Your ferret may be feeling unwell, and is biting because of his discomfort.
And yet other ferrets bite simply because they have not been taught otherwise. This is often the case for younger ferrets, but some adult ferrets also missed the essential training. If you suspect that this is the case, remain patient and begin re-training your ferret, beginning with the most basic of steps. Some ferrets bite when they are feeling playful, or want your attention. It is important to train your ferrets that this behavior is not ok, both for your safety and the safety of others.
Whenever your ferret begins biting, remember to remain patient and handle him with care. It is possible to re-train your ferret to prevent biting, but it takes time and energy. If you cannot figure out why your ferret is biting, talk to your veterinarian for further advice.
